As a working mom, “flexible careers” always sound amazing, but you aren’t sure how to actually find them. Right now, many moms find themselves working in more traditional, 9-to-5 jobs, and are a little uneasy about leaving their current role and pursuing something more flexible. In most cases, that’s just because many of them aren’t really sure what types of careers they should even look into, and if they can actually make money doing something less structured. On the other hand, some moms want to head back to the workforce after time away but they are unsure of where to start.

This leads a lot of people to the beauty industry, a place where flexibility is natural, and making people smile is just part of the job. Plus, working in the beauty industry is a natural transition for many moms, since their Pinterest boards are already full of fun hair and makeup ideas (like these).

If you love beauty, have a passion for hair and makeup, and want to find a career that allows you to spend more time with your family, you should take a look at these 4 flexible jobs for working moms in the beauty industry:

1) Writing / Blogging

Do you love to write? If so, pursuing a career as a professional beauty or cosmetology writer could be the path for you. In this job, you’d keep up with the latest trends, styles, and techniques as you write about them.

This could range from being a freelance writer for a beauty magazine or even starting your own beauty blog. Either way, you wouldn’t be confined to a cubicle from 9-to-5. Rather, you could work from home or cozy up in your favorite coffee shop writing while the kids are at school.

In terms of education needed for being a writer, it can vary. If you want to specifically write about the beauty industry, it would be helpful for you to take some cosmetology courses and enroll in a creative writing class or two.

2) Sales Representative

Are you great with people? Do you have one of those social personalities that people flock to? You may enjoy working in sales!

Before you conjure up images of sitting at a desk making cold calls all day, consider the different types of sales careers you could pursue with a cosmetology degree. Beauty products, salon sales, wedding packages and more all are real options in the beauty industry.

Many moms find themselves actively using a specific product or brand when it comes to their own hair, skin or makeup, and some even refer their friends and family to their favorite products as it is. If this sounds like you, consider a career as a beauty sales representative – you may just love it.

3) Cosmetologist

If you want spend your days helping people look and feel their best, look no further than becoming a certified cosmetologist. As a cosmetologist, you’d primarily work with hair (hair styling, coloring, cutting, etc.) but could also focus on other things like makeup or skin care. You could work in a salon, hotel, spa, or resort, and most cosmetology careers allow you to create a flexible schedule that makes sense for you.

4) Business Owner

When you think about starting a career in cosmetology, you may not realize that the education you’d receive in beauty school can actually help you start your own business one day, specifically, a salon. While running your own salon is a tough job, it is also incredibly rewarding and flexible and is a great outlet for the entrepreneur in you.

As an owner, you’d be responsible for hiring the right people, choosing a great location, managing the floor, and even meeting with beauty sales reps to explore the latest products and decide what to carry at your salon. In order for all of this to run smoothly, you’d need to be an expert when it comes to all things beauty, so you’d need a solid cosmetology education (and probably some business courses) under your belt before you set out to open a business.

Note: owning your own salon is a lot different than being a beauty blogger or sales rep. While it is still a rewarding and flexible career, being a business owner requires a lot of time in order to get things running well enough that you can spend more time with your family. If you have the drive to do it, it is an amazing career in the long run!

Next Steps for Flexible Careers

The best way to begin a beauty career is to start exploring cosmetology courses. Take note of the schools near you, what types of courses they offer, what their students and alumni say, and how well the school sets you up for success.

At the end of the day, the most important thing for working moms is finding a career that is flexible enough for their busy schedules and allows them to be creative and enjoy their work. If that sounds like something you’d be interested in, take a look at the cosmetology courses offered at VICI.
