When you were growing up and going to school, you probably didn’t have much say in where you actually went to learn. Most of the time, that choice was up to your parents or just the location of your home. As you wrap up with high school, though, and you are considering enrolling in a beauty school, the decision is truly up to you – where are you going to go?
Choosing the right beauty school and cosmetology program for you can seem like a challenge, but if you take your time, do your research, and ask the right questions, you are setting yourself up for a fun and rewarding career in a growing industry.
So – how do you know what to research or what questions to ask? One of the best places to start is by contacting your local beauty schools and setting up a tour. By visiting the school, you have the opportunity to experience what it would be like to be a student there. Plus, you can use that time to get to know the admissions staff and have them walk you through the process.
Since you probably don’t want to walk into your beauty school tour without any questions, here are five you can start with!
1) Is your beauty school accredited?
When a beauty school is accredited, that simply means that the school, staff, and programs are inline with the U.S. Department of Education’s standards. It also means that the school is recognized as a high-quality institute, and they have the programs and teachers in place to make sure you get a great education.
Knowing that the beauty school is accredited allows you to rest easy knowing that they have everything you need to be successful.
2) What will I learn in the programs?
Let’s say you are interested in enrolling in a beauty school’s cosmetology program. While it is really helpful for you to check out the school’s website and read up on their program, there are just some things best said in person.
For example, you can look at the VICI cosmetology program and learn that we cover topics like hair styling, manicuring, and the tools and equipment you’ll be using. But when you come in for a tour, you can hear more about the specific things your teachers will cover, from techniques to big picture things like owning a salon.
This also helps you decide between programs, as you can learn what topics are covered in each of the beauty programs offered at the school. You may come into your tour more interested in the esthiology program, but leave set on enrolling in the cosmetology program.
3) Will I get one-on-one time with my instructors?
An important part of any beauty school program is the experiences and attention you receive from your instructors. When you are on your tour, try to take note of how you see students interacting with the teachers and vice versa. You want to see what the staff invests into each individual student, which helps them turn their creativity and passions into a real career.
4) What type of learning can I expect?
One of the features that beauty school students love is the mixed-learning experience. In traditional college, you tend to spend the majority of your time sitting in classes, reading textbooks, and writing papers – all until you finally get some hands-on experience with an internship (possibly years later).
In beauty school, though, the education you receive is a healthy mix of traditional classroom learning and on-the-floor salon experiences. While you will still have classroom staples like research and note taking, you’ll also be asked to step out onto the clinic floor and provide real services to real people.
Going to beauty school feels a lot like working in the industry, since you are providing actual salon services while in the program (don’t worry, you will have highly-trained instructors there the whole time!).
5) Does your beauty school offer any career services?
Not only do you need to decide on which school you’d like to enroll in, you need to consider what your career options are after your complete the program and how your school will help you get there. As you tour the school, ask your tour guide about the job placement and career services offered there. Will the school help you find a job? What is their success rate (placement rate)? How does it work?
The right beauty school for you will be able to answer these questions honestly, stay by your side as you move through the program, and help you begin your new career in the beauty industry!
