On May 20th, VICÍ Beauty School hosted a career fair at their Bayshore campus. It was an amazing turnout, with around 30 salons in attendance. Our beauty schools want to help students become wonderful cosmetologists, but we go even father than honing our students’ skills. We provide opportunities for students to meet salon owners and managers before graduation, so when they are ready to apply for jobs, they already have a career network. Check out just a few of the salons that joined us at our VICÍ Beauty School Career Fair:
In addition to a variety of salons and spas, our VICÍ Beauty School hosted two guest speakers — Tom Miller, the owner and stylist of Beauty and Cutting Group in Milwaukee and David Hagemeier, a salon owner of several Cost Cutters and SuperCuts in Southeast Wisconsin. These two speakers offered real world advice about joining a salon after graduation. Tom Miller reminded our students to “open your mind, try everything at least once and pay attention.” He also let our students know that learning doesn’t end after graduation. “Most graduates go to school for four years. You’ve completed year one. Think of the next three years of your life as your continuing education.” Tom Miller also told our students that they will have to really market themselves, even if it’s difficult, which means cold calling. When he was starting his salon, Tom Miller would head to the color isle at Walgreens and talk to the women who were looking at boxed color. He’d also meet clients in T.J. Maxx and at the makeup counters at department stores. His creativity in marketing has made him a successful business owner and stylist, and we were thrilled he shared some of his knowledge with us.
Dave Hagemeier owns several salons in Southeast Wisconsin under the Signature Two brand, which is Cost Cutters and SuperCuts. He gave our students amazing interview tips, and let us know that in an interview, you should be questioning the salon, too. “The best job will be more than the right pay and benefits. Ask questions!” He provided a list of questions that grads can expect to be asked, as well as questions they can ask the salon. Grads should ask their potential employer questions like “Who is your ideal candidate, what can I do to help make this salon successful, and how long has your most tenured stylist been working for you?” These answers should tell you whether or not that salon is the perfect fit for you. David Hagemeier has years of experience working in the corporate world, and he said he loves working in the salon industry. He even brought with Scarlet, a VICÍ grad and stylist for Signature Two, to speak. Hagemeier’s advice will go a long way with our soon-to-be graduates.
At VICÍ Beauty School, you’ll be prepared to do more than just cut and style hair. We will help you find a career.
