Student Spotlight: Jasmine Williams at VICI Beauty School
Every month, VICI Aveda Institute and VICI Beauty School want to shine a spotlight on one of our students who works hard and embodies VICI’s ideals. This month, we’re introducing you to Jasmine Williams, a student at VICÍ Beauty School at our Bayshore campus. We sat down with Jasmine and learned more about her passion for the beauty industry.
VICI: Why did you decide to go into the cosmetology field?
JASMINE: Because I love doing hair, I love working with people, and to be a cosmetologist has always been my dream.
V: Why did you choose VICI Beauty School?
J: I chose VICI because it was very multicultural and I liked it a lot. After being shown around, I liked it. I also looked online, and VICI had a really high percentage of students who passed the state boards. That was important to me.
V: What do you like about VICI Beauty School now that you’ve been here a while?
J: I enjoy doing all kinds of hair. At VICI, we don’t just do African American hair or Hispanic hair; we do all kinds of hair. I enjoy my clients. The teachers are very helpful, as well. I also like selling products. I love selling retail. When someone sits in my chair, I’m in control, and I enjoy educating my clients about their hair and products they should be using.
V: What challenges do you face and how do you overcome them?
J: Sometimes I have clients who say “Can you do my hair?” or “Can you do this cut?” and the cuts and colors are very challenging. To overcome this, I’ll ask an instructor and then go from there. I was also pregnant while here, and that was very challenging. When I started, I wasn’t pregnant. After a month, I found out I was, which meant I was pregnant almost the whole time of this program. But I knew I really wanted this; I wouldn’t make excuses. I followed through and pushed through it. I was very productive the whole time. It worked out really nice. It was challenging to do pedicures while pregnant, but when you really want something, you don’t make excuses.
V: What would you like to do after you graduate?
J: I’d like to get my manager’s license and my instructor’s license and open my own salon and beauty school. It will come – no rush. Those are my dreams.
V: What advice would you give to a student just entering the program?
J: The best advice I can give is to stay positive, come to school and be productive. That’s the biggest thing. Don’t just come to school; be productive when you are here. Don’t complain. When you get a ticket, be happy to do it. Be on time. Always smile, even if you’re doing something challenging. If you don’t feel good, your clients shouldn’t know – they’ll lose confidence in you. And finally, be the best you!
Jasmine is an exceptional student. She has the most new requests at VICI Beauty School, she is high in retail and she always has a positive attitude. Her favorite color is pink, she loves pizza and she attended El Punte High School.
