Because experience is so vital for beauty school graduates who are in search of a job, VICI Beauty Schools does all we can to give our student an edge. Thankfully, we have great relationships with many Milwaukee salons who can help us out with that. We began a salon mentorship program this year which allows students to shadow salon professionals in the workforce. Working on our schools’ clinic floors is great experience, but we’re thrilled to launch a new facet to our school which provides even more opportunities for our students.
Brittany at Cost Cutters
Cost Cutters was a big help in providing a learning environment for our students. Brittany joined the staff at Cost Cutters in Greenfield and learned about their point of sales system, as well as watched stylists work. We visited her on her first day at the salon, and although she hadn’t had time to observe a lot, she was already excited to be there. We even got to watch as Brittany put her newly acquired receptionist skills to work as she checked in a guest. We appreciate Cost Cutters and the Signature Two family showing her the salon ropes for a few days.
Melanie at Charlie’s East Coast Hair Design
Melanie spent her four days of mentorship at Charlie’s East Coast Hair Design in Brookfield, where she watched the stylists perform highlights, ombres and men’s haircuts with a straight razor. Our students do not work with straight razors, so this was a great learning opportunity for her. Melanie was glad she participated in VICI Beauty School’s Salon Mentorship Program because it provided new insights from new stylists. This salon does hair color, smoothing treatments, and just about everything else you could want from a salon, so there was plenty to watch and learn. The staff warmly welcomed Melanie and us when we popped in for a visit. We also got to spend time with a VICI grad who now works at Charlie’s, which made our visit there even better.
Jennifer at Erik of Norway
When we checked in with Jennifer at Erik of Norway in Mequon, she was shadowing another VICI grad – Brooke who graduated from our north campus. Jennifer observed shampoos, blowouts and coloring. The techniques were new and the products used at this salon were different than what Jennifer works with at our south campus, so she had plenty to learn. Jennifer loves updos and styling, and one day hopes to style weddings. Her mentorship at Erik of Norway salon is a step in the right direction. This beautiful salon was a wonderful learning environment for our student, and we’re so glad they participated in our Salon Mentorship Program.
Sarah at Salon Medusa
At Salon Medusa, Sarah observed stylists working with Aveda products – the same we use at our south campus – but that doesn’t mean she didn’t learn anything new. The salon has an esthiology clinic, and she’s observed David, the owner, perform a variety of styles. When we talked to her, it was her final day at the salon, and she was happy she participated in this program. The best news was that after the third day, she decided she would love to work at Salon Medusa and put in an application. Had it not been for the mentorship program, Sarah may never have applied! We hope shadowing at salons builds relationships between stylists and students that could eventually lead to a career.
Observing salon professionals is important in understanding how life works after graduation. We want to prepare our students as best we can for a career after their last day at VICI. As we continue to grow our Salon Mentorship Program between our beauty schools and local Milwaukee-area salons, we hope to offer even better resources and opportunities to our students. We want to give a big thank-you to the salons who participated with us for the first year. We’re excited to see our mentorship program flourish.
