We love showing off our students! We have some of the most creative, hardest working cosmetology students at our beauty schools, and Niki Burns is no exception. She continues to bring in new request clients, and her passion for this industry is inspiring to her clients and future students. We sat down with Niki to learn more about her experience at VICI Beauty School in this month’s Student Spotlight.
VICI: Why did you decide to go to VICI?
Niki When I was in high school, I saw VICI at Brookfield and I thought that being a stylist looked like a really cool thing to do. But then I became a mom, and that halted the plan. I’ve always wanted to do this since high school, and everyone knows this school. I’ve known about it for years, and I feel like going to VICI is like going to Harvard.
V: What do you like the most about VICI Beauty School?
N: It can be really fun. Once you’re on the floor and you’re out of the stress of the classroom, it’s like being with your friends. You’re hanging out with friends and learning from them. The instructors josh around with you. It’s a fun atmosphere.
V: There are fun days, and then there are probably challenging days. When faced with a challenge, how do you overcome it?
N: I step off the floor and really just realize there’s a goal in sight – a career I want to do. If you have a bad day, that’s just life. You’ve got to get over it, have some water, and remind yourself every day that this is school and there’s a goal, so you need to stick with it.
V: What advice would you give to a new student?
N: If you want to be here, be here. It’s as easy as that. If you come here and decide it isn’t your thing, don’t waste your time. This is hard and serious, so you have to be devoted. You’ll miss sleep and social activities, but it’s just 11 months to do something you really want to do! Stay and be completely devoted to this.
V: What would you like to do in the future?
N: I’d love to work in downtown Milwaukee, maybe the Third Ward. It’s the vibe I like. I’d like to work in a full service salon that does everything. I love makeup and up-dos, but I also love cuts and colors. I want to express my creativity…maybe even hook up with theater or fashion shows.
We have no doubt that Niki will go on to do creative work. She has a bubbly, sweet personality that any guest would love. Just for fun, we asked her what kind of animal she would be, and she replied that she’d be a hummingbird. A colorful bird with a lot of energy? That sounds like Niki! She also loves pizza and Gone with the Wind. At the end of our time together, Niki added “When I meet past students, there’s a camaraderie. We say ‘do you remember this or that?’ It’s cool. There’s a family here that moves on and on.” We couldn’t agree more.
