How to Succeed in Beauty School

How to Succeed in Beauty School

The most successful cosmetology students don’t necessarily have to be the best at hair or makeup. Successful students manage their time well and understand that beauty school should be a priority. There are a few things you should do and a few things you should avoid if you want to be a success at your cosmetology school.

Be On Time

If you’ve made the financial commitment to beauty school, it’s important that you make the time commitment as well. Tardiness can interfere with your learning and can even result in suspension. Missing hours and days at beauty school will set back your education and push back your graduation date. Making the time for beauty school is one of the most important ways to succeed during the program.

To get to school on time, make sure you have reliable transportation before starting school. If you’re attending school in a metro area, take traffic into account when timing out your route. And as all Midwestern residents know, snow can really interfere with driving. Leave early when winter finally hits so you can still get to class on time. The occasional tardy is acceptable, after all, we all know sometimes the car just won’t start or the battery for our alarm dies. To succeed, tardiness cannot become a habit, though. A successful student treats beauty school just like their career – you couldn’t regularly be late when working at a salon with guests. Having that mindset will get you to school on time!

Don’t Procrastinate

State law requires students to be productive while in beauty school. At VICI Beauty Schools, for example, our students stay productive by reading their textbooks, working with guests and styling mannequin heads. At VICI, we want our students to be productive 90% of the time, which means students work on A LOT of mannequin heads. If a student procrastinates, it’s easy to fall behind on school work. Before they know it, their perspective graduation date is approaching and they aren’t at their productivity mark. You may spend your last days at beauty school curling, cutting and braiding mannequin heads! Your remaining days at cosmetology school will be far more fun if you stay up-to-date on all your work.

Ask Questions (That’s what beauty school is for!)

As a student, it’s ok to ask questions. The instructors expect it. Students are learning and a lot of techniques are brand new, so instead of feeling bashful, ask questions. It’s better to understand how to create a style with a little help than struggle with it on your own. The teachers and more experienced students are valuable resources for your questions.

When you begin on the clinic floor, don’t be afraid to ask your guest questions, too. The successful students have great communication skills and will ask for clarity if they don’t understand their guest’s wants. Taking that extra five minutes to really understand your client will be far easier to handle than an angry guest.

The most successful students put their heart and soul into their education. They understand that their year in beauty school is the platform for the rest of their lives. It’s an exciting time and if you want to get the most out of your education, you’ll need to put in the effort. These three simple ways are just the beginning towards success in beauty school.
